The tennis legend, 58, blasted the 30 year old, claiming he is a “distant fourth” behind Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal and Novak Djokovic.
Murray has won three Grand Slam titles, while Federer has 81, Nadal totalled 15 with his win at the French Open and Djokovic has 12.
In an interview with The Times, however, John blasted the Sports Personality Of The Year winner, saying he is “surprised” at how far he has come in the sport.

“He’s always been top four, but it’s been a distant fourth. In a way, he’s still distant fourth,” he quipped.
“I think it’s amazing that he reached No 1, considering the obstacles, the competition that he was up against. I think that’s tremendous,” McEnroe continued.
“That’s part of why he’s struggling now. It took such an effort to get there, I think even he was shocked. But you know, those three guys are better than him.

“No disrespect. They’re better overall. But you’re talking about three of the five greatest players that ever lived, so it’s a tall order.”
But Andy Murray has since hit back at John’s claims, telling him he deserves to be world No. 1.
Insisting players shouldn’t be judged on Grand Slam success, he said at Queen’s Club: “For me, it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. I’m very proud of the Olympic medals, they mean a lot to me.

“There are other tournaments outside the Slams as well. Most of the players enjoy competing in them. This tournament over my career is for sure my best tournament and I love playing here. It depends, everyone’s criteria for judging a player will be different.
“I think for pretty much all of my career, I’ve always been behind them in the rankings. If you look at the titles and everything those guys have won, I can’t compare myself to them.”
Murray admitted he may only have two more years competing at the top level, saying it is tough to stay at the top.
He then vowed to make the most of the remaining few years he has in his career, revealing he aims to play at the next Olympic games.
