Kim Kardashian returns to social media to complain about psoriasis face outbreak – but what is it and how can it be treated?

Not only has she been sharing some adorable photos of her family on Instagram, she’s even opened up about her battle with psoriasis one more.

Kanye West’s wife admitted the condition had got worse as she tweeted: “Wait why am I now getting psoriasis on my face?”

As a GP I often see people with skin conditions and it’s really common for both doctors and people without such conditions to underestimate the stigma and effect on confidence that they can have.

Whether its acne, eczema, birthmarks or psoriasis, the damage can be far reaching. It is therefore refreshing to see one of the most famous celebs on the planet talk openly about her skin condition.

Cara Delevingne has also opened up about her battle with psoriasis in the past.

Here’s everything you need to know about the skin condition.

Psoriasis symptoms

Kim, 36, developed psoriasis around the age of 30. Causing red, flaky, crusty patches of skin covered with silvery scale, it can cover any part of the body and can be controlled but not cured.

Refreshingly, the ever perfect Kim has discussed this openly. Kim’s psoriasis started on her legs but has now covered much of her body.

In photos the lesions are often retouched to restore Kim’s skin but she has been brave enough to share photos before the retouching.

She has described it as her ‘big flaw’ and that she has accepted it as part of her which is why she doesn’t try too hard it hide it.

What causes psoriasis?

Psoriasis can be so widespread that it can shed flakes of skin constantly and be embarrassing.

Symptoms tend to get better and worse without warning but are often made worse by stress alcohol, hormones, smoking, some medication, and even a throat infection.

It can even make joints swell and hurt. This is a type of arthritis and needs to be treated quickly to prevent permanent joint damage.

The rash can often be mistaken for other conditions as Kim discovered when Kylie told her it was a fungus. Kim bravely filmed a doctors appointment where the diagnosis was discussed.

Psoriasis runs in families and Kim’s mum Kris Jenner is a known sufferer.

Psoriasis treatment

Once the diagnosis is established it’s important to find a treatment combination that works for you. This is usually a combination of constant moisturising, creams, light therapy and sometimes oral or injected medication.

Kim uses a combination of diet (avoiding triggers), steroid injections and creams. She admits to using cover-up when going out or for important events and I often recommend Clinique cover-up for rashes and scars.

The important thing, as always, is to see a GP and get a diagnosis and then find the right combination of treatment for you. And be proud, if Kim can do it, so can you!
