EastEnders teamed up with Samaritans for Lee Carter's heartbreaking suicide storyline

Over the past few weeks, viewers of the hit BBC soap have seen Lee struggle with both his depression and growing financial troubles.

And on last night’s episode, things got too much for Danny Dyer’s on-screen son after his bully work colleague, Oz, goaded him about the robbery at the Queen Vic.

While potentially pregnant wife, Whitney, gave him the cold treatment after learning that he was involved in the pub’s break in after he was arrested.

As he got into his car, Lee was seen breaking down before getting the parking ticket that was displayed on his dashboard and writing the words “I’m sorry” on the back.

Putting it back on the dashboard, he then got out of the car and walked away as the doof doofs began to play.

Talking about the sensitive subject matter, Samaritans’ media adviser, Lorna Fraser, commended the hit BBC soap for its coverage.

Lorna told the Mirror: “Given the sensitivities with covering the topic of suicide we were pleased that EastEnders came to us for guidance on Lee Carter’s storyline.

“Increasing people’s understanding on the issues surrounding suicide, such as the kinds of problems that can lead a person to experience suicidal feelings and encouraging people to seek help, can help generate conversation and for some this can be a lifeline.

“Coverage of suicide, in drama and news, carries an element of risk, therefore it’s important that guidance is sought.

“Samaritans has been working with the media for over two decades providing expert advice on this.”
