Sam Faiers was met with both praise and criticism when she breastfed her baby son Paul live on This Morning earlier this year.

And the Mummy Diaries star has admitted that she was encouraged to show herself breastfeeding live on ITV with a little help from This Morning presenter Holly Willoughby.

The former TOWIE star said Holly, who is a mother of three herself, helped her to make the decision just moments before they went on air.

Speaking exclusively to OK! Online at the launch of her YouTube channel, Sam, 25, opened up on her decision to showcase the moment live on TV.

“Honestly we sat in the car for almost four hours. We went past three accidents and they had to keep pushing my slot back,” the TV star said.

“When I finally got there I was literally rushed through to the sofa.”

And Holly, 35, later stepped in as Sam prepared for her interview with the host and her co-star Phillip Schofield.

“The baby was asleep in the car and I knew he was going to be hungry. So right before we went live, Holly was like: ‘Just feed him if you want to feed him!’ The baby was going all stiff and searching.”

“And then I went ‘okay, but do you have something you can cover with?’ They have the kitchen on set so we just got a tea towel.”

Viewers praised the interview, in which Sam was seen breastfeeding her son under the tea towel, but the mum-of-one was also met with criticism.

Some viewers of the ITV daytime show branded the sweet mother-son moment as a “publicity stunt”, with Twitter users saying Sam only breastfed her son on TV to get publicity for her show, The Mummy Diaries.

“It was all fine in the end. But some people thought it was a publicity stunt,” she explained.

“When it’s live TV you can’t wait around. I sat there and I thought this is just going to be such a big thing.

“People are going to be really negative, it’s going to be a big thing.

“But I’m so happy people were so positive. We literally had seconds.”

Sam went on to say that she hopes she can be a role model for young mums, explaining why she often receives backlash for being so public about breastfeeding.

“I think some people think mums that are breastfeeding are trying to show flesh. I just don’t understand it. For me, I’m a young mum and I’m a first-time mum.

“It was hard to start with. The first six weeks were difficult, but you have to persevere. But it’s amazing, it’s great for the baby.”
