Now, the reality star’s adoptive parents have placed the blame for her tragic death on the MTV show.

Janice Fairman admitted she believes the 23 year old would still be alive today if she hadn’t appeared on the second series of the show.

The grieving mother said: “She was a gorgeous girl and it all went to her head.

“She thought she could pretty much do whatever she liked after the show. She was determined to get everything she wanted.”

Janice added to Mail Online: “I wish she had never been on TV. It played a big part in her death.

“I think it messed her up big time.

“When we tried to put our foot down, that’s when she left home. I don’t think there is anything more we could have done to help her.”

She also admitted her daughter went behind her and husband Gary’s back to apply to the MTV show.

The 66 year old said: “She asked us about it later.”

And speaking about the teenage pregnancy, she added: “At first we were very, very disappointed.”

Gary, who describes himself as pro-life, continued: “We had so many children go through this house, we had to do it.”

The reality star passed away on December 21, from an apparent overdose.

Both Janice and Valerie’s birth mother, Beth Shepherd, believe her death was the result of an overdose.

Beth told the publication: “I think it was pink,” referring to the synthetic drug that has wreaked havoc on America.

Janice admitted that Valerie struggled with addiction following her appearance on the reality show.

“She had been in and out of rehab for five years,” she told the publication.

Valerie left home when she was 18, leaving Janice and Gary to bring up her daughter, Nevaeh.

“She would call and she’d come over to see her daughter – a couple of times she went to church with us,” the grandmother said.

“But I never knew where she was staying, whether it was Coatesville [Pennsylvania], or somewhere else.

“I know she was living with a guy called Russ for a while.”
