Survival Of The Fittest has landed on our TV screens and has already been dubbed the new Love Island.

Among the contestants are Georgia Toffolo’s ex James Middleton, famous fitness blogger Jenny West and Tia Latham, who has already opened up about her “very different story”.

She explained: “My story is very different from most other people’s. When I was born, nature was a bit confused. I had female chromosomes – which are XX – but my body didn’t know which direction to go in.

“So as I got older, I had to go through a process to become the woman I am today.”

And within hours of meeting her co stars, Tia instantly opened up to Jenny about what she went through as a young adolescent.

She said: “My parents assumed I was one way and my body decided to go another way on its own.

“You could put it in the intersex category. I didn’t develop the same as everyone else. I started growing boobs and I didn’t grow any facial hair.

“I seeked medical advice and that’s when they discovered I had XX chromosomes.”

Explaining the condition further, Dr Renee HoenderKamp explained to OK! Online: “‘Intersex’ is a general term used for a variety of conditions in which a person is born with a reproductive or sexual anatomy that doesn’t seem to fit the typical definitions of female or male.

“For example, a person might be born appearing to be female on the outside, but having mostly male-typical anatomy on the inside. Another example is a person may be born with genitals that seem to be in-between the usual male and female types. Or a person may be born with mosaic genetics, so that some of her cells have XX chromosomes and some of them have XY.

Dr Renee went on to admit the area is a complex issue because of the wide definition but has admitted the condition is thought of as quite rare.

She added: “It is difficult to estimate how common these cases are because there are so many different conditions that fall under the umbrella.”
